Subaru Outback vs Toyota RAV4

Performance Specs

2021 Subaru Outback: The new Subaru Outback and the 2021 Toyota RAV4 are each known for being easy to drive, offering both drivers and passengers a smooth ride. But, while they're both great options for the city, the suburbs, and the highways, the Subaru Outback is the better pick for getting off the beaten path. Here's why…

First of all, it's got 8.7 inches of ground clearance. Next, it's got X-MODE®, which fine-tunes Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive System, maximizing your traction on slippery surfaces (snow and rain, beware). Finally, X-MODE® includes Hill Descent Control, further boosting your stability and confidence.

On the other hand, while the RAV4 can go off the road, it doesn't offer the same exact systems as the Outback. Therefore, it might not be quite as stable on those treacherously bumpy hills or tricky trails.

The best thing about the Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system is that it's a standard feature.  In other words, all Outback models automatically come with technology that's able to distribute power evenly among all four wheels.  Unfortunately, while the RAV4 has AWD it doesn't come standard…

Interior & Amenities

If you need lots of space for five people, the Outback and the RAV4 have both got you covered, especially in the front row. For example, Subaru's SUV gives the driver and the passenger 40.8 inches of headroom, 42.9 inches of legroom, and even 58.1 inches of shoulder room. All in all, it adds up to 108.1 cubic feet.

Toyota's SUV comes pretty close, but it's not quite there. It offers 37.7 inches of front headroom, 41.0 inches of front legroom, and 57.8 inches of front shoulder room. That's just 98.9 cubic feet for passengers.

Plus, you can choose to outfit either vehicle with plenty of amenities that are designed to help keep you comfortable, including available heated front and rear seats, and even an available heated steering wheel.

Likewise, both feature optional dual-zone automatic climate control systems, which let you and your front-seat passenger independently select your preferred temperatures.
